The North American P-51D Mustang was built as a long-range fighter and bomber, and was the best fighter aircraft of late WWII, seeing action in other engagements as well. At the time, no other WWII combat plane could match the P-51's range, performance or speed. In 1944 the Mustang was recognized as the best single seat long range escort fighter. Over 15,000 P-51s were produced, The Willit Run? was flown by Lt. Col. Frederick H. Lefebre, who belonged to the 351st FS, 353rd FG, 8th Air Force, England.
