In the early American sport of boxing, tossing one's hat into the ring symbolized one's intention to become a challenger. As the first American squadron to enter combat in WWI the 94th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, chose Uncle Sam's top hat, encircled with a ring to symbolize their intention to enter the fight.
