Without doubt the most famous Japanese fighter of WWII is the Mitsubishi Zero. When first encountered by Allied pilots the Zero's superior performance came as a real shock. The A6M2 was powered by a Sakae 12 radial engine producing 950 horsepower and a top speed of 331 miles per hour. Armament consisted of two 7.7 mm machine guns and two 20mm cannon in the wings. This model represents an aircraft assigned to the aircraft carrier Akagi durng the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. On that day this aircraft was piloted by Lt. Cmdr. Shigeru Itaya, overall leader of Akagi's fighters on the first wave of the attack. Length 3.75" Wingspan 4.75"
