Product Description

Details

By all accounts, Charles Nungesser was a quintessential fighter pilot. Like many other young Frenchmen, Nungesser enlisted when war broke out in 1914. He began his military career in the cavalry, transferring to the flying service in 1915. He scored his first victory in July of 1915 and went on to score 42 more. He finished the war as France's third-highest-scoring ace.

To ensure that his German opponents knew he meant business, he painted a Black Heart insignia on each of his aircraft. Though each version was slightly different, they all contained a skull and crossbones, a pair of funerary candles and a coffin, signifying the fate of all those who tangled with him. For at least 43 men, the warning proved to be prophetic.

Created especially for The Museum of Flight by Hogeye, the Black Heart patch is a fully embroidered black and white patch

The iron on patch measures 3.5" wide by 3.25" tall.
