On December 24, 1968, one of the most iconic photos from the Apollo era was taken by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders. It shows the earth rising from the Moon's surface, and would become what some considered "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken". Fifty years later Anders said of the photo, "We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth."
